I Can't Stop Talking About Ideas. They Can't Stop Talking About Me.

What To Do As Justice Department Made It Easier To Deport DACA Recipients

Here you go, via 'Official State Media'.

Dear DACA recipients and their USA citizen loved ones and supporters,

1. Get an Immigration Attorney. It may cost +/- $20,000. DACA lives are worth it.

2. Get married already! This will make DACA recipients harder to deport. I know you delayed marriage because it doesn't make one a USA citizen automatically. Get married. Period.

3. Collect your historical photos to show how truly, honestly, and with longevity, you've been a part of the USA. You only know the USA. Your friends, loved ones, school cohort, co-workers are all here. Gather photo documentation.

4. Get letters of support. People love you, respect you, grew up with you, went to school with you all of your life. Don't be afraid: Ask these people to vouch for you! Show them the below sample I wrote for a DACA recipient on 4/27/2026, identifying information redacted.

To Whom It May Concern,

My name is Jennifer Lee Lawson. I am writing in support of citizenship of the United States of America for [REDACTED].

I have known [REDACTED] for about 10 years. He is such an intelligent, kind, funny, and thoughtful person that it inspired me to organize a rally for DACA and TPS in Orlando, Florida several years ago. This nation-wide rally was entirely peaceful and within the law.

[REDACTED] is a hard worker. Through his work, he contributes to the betterment of the USA economy.

[REDACTED] love each other—and they have for many years. [REDACTED] comes to Christmas, Easter,  the 4th of July, and other family events. We love [REDACTED] as family.

[REDACTED] is a law-abiding person. He is definitely not involved in any criminal activity.

I am an American Revolutionary War descendant. As such, I am able to welcome immigrants at swearing-in ceremonies for the USA. There is no better person I'd nominate to be one of us than [REDACTED]

Thank you for your time,

Jennifer Lee Lawson, MA

10 Missing/Dead Scientists Tied to Sensitive Government Research Spark Investigations. What's That Mean for Other Intellectuals?

The Donald is not my favorite, as everyone knows. Yet, here we are. I tried to sound the alarm on this issue, particularly for philosophers, rather than scientists. I was asked, "Where's your proof?!"

Unfortunately, proof would have been a dead, severely injured or tortured individual. We have 10 deceased and missing ones now.

Stay safe out there, everyone! Here's three ways you can, from a formerly skinny, pretty, young, white, blue-eyed, blonde who made it to 46 years old:

1. Keep a public/social presence.

2. Check on each other.

3. If you blog, post on social media, have a YouTube channel, etc., try to include scope of Planet Earth. It's not viral for viral's sake. It's viral for our lives.

Why would we be at risk, as philosophers? Because we do stuff like this.

We don't sign up to die. We just know this happens in our line of work.

NEW BOOK: The Days Have it Made: Essays On Politics and Philosophy Through Cancer Treatment

In 2024, Jennifer Lee Lawson became severely ill. She was diagnosed with breast cancer, and all throughout the year 2025, she went through cancer treatment. She experienced a lumpectomy, a port placement, chemotherapy, radiation, hormone therapy, bone treatments, oral surgery--and through it all she did her best to continue to be a good citizen and philosopher by commenting on current issues, ideas, and events.

These SIX essays are hand-picked by Lawson, showcasing some of her best work during difficult medical times.

New UNF President Remembers Fondly Philosophy Classes!

Welcome from the Dean

Dean Kaveri Subrahmanyam

Dear Osprey Community,

As we come to the close of the academic year and look ahead to summer, I want to share a few moments from the semester that reflect the heart and soul of the College of Arts and Sciences.

Earlier this month, we were pleased to welcome Interim President Angela Garcia Falconetti to a meeting with college faculty and staff. Her reflections on her time as a student at UNF and Dr. Fenner’s philosophy class were a powerful reminder of the lasting impact our faculty have on students.

I am also excited to share the launch of the COAS Interdisciplinary Colloquium Series, where faculty from different fields explore complex ideas from multiple perspectives — reflecting the reality that many of today’s most important questions and discoveries are shaped at the intersections of disciplines.

Thank you to everyone who supported Giving Day through sharing, participation or giving. These collective efforts directly support our students and programs.

Finally, as we look ahead to commencement, I am filled with pride in our graduates. This year, Julian Hooks will graduate with his Bachelor of Fine Arts in art, along with his mother, Janelle Hooks, who will earn her Master of Social Work on the same day. Their shared milestone shows the nest at its best: a place of belonging, purpose and connection for all Ospreys.

With much gratitude,

Kaveri Subrahmanyam

Will the Real Merciless Savages Please Stand Up?

Colonialism is the the policy or practice of acquiring full or partial political control over another country, often occupying it with settlers, and exploiting it economically. The United States has done this since almost its inception with regard to Indigenous nations. That particular instance of colonialism is ongoing--happening to this very day. It is not merely historical.

"The First Thanksgiving" by Jean Leon Gerome Ferris, 1899.

I began my expertise on colonialism in 2003 at Stetson University. You can read my undergraduate thesis on colonialism in the United States
here. There are a myriad of policies associated with the United States' colonialism, such as the suppression of transgender people, genocide, and cultural genocide. All ways of forcibly imposing a grotesque, narrow, and unimaginative worldview on all of life, including, yes, the natural environment.

I want to be clear about something, however. The United States is not unique in enacting this evil upon the world. Canada and Australia have done much the same to Indigenous people, as well.

What makes the United States such an existential threat--and a threat to all of reality--is that the United States became the global superpower after the Cold War, enabling this political neurosis to be unleashed across the globe, and now threatens, with Space Force and oligarch Elon Musk's plan for Mars, the very universe. It's an evil inversion: People who have been called "merciless Indian savages," even within the United States' founding documents, turn out to be much more civilized than the faux Christians conquering and pillaging the world.

Philosopher Vlad Vexler indicated that Donald Trump is not an aberration, and he isn't. As I have shown, Trump and his regime is now a monstrous fascist foot in the face of all of humanity, which grew from colonial seeds 250 years ago.

When put this way, perhaps my little fledgling undergraduate thesis that concluded decolonization (which I didn't envision how that would look for you) may have just been too early, too prescient, and way too correct.

An Explication On How Gender Critical Theory Is A Colonial Project

I have an obscure area of specialization. I happen to know about–and have, at this point, 30 years of experience in–Native American Studies. Given the title of this writing, you may wonder why that is my first sentence. I’ll tell you why. For over 500 years, there has been an ongoing colonial project stretching the globe. Decolonization, among those of us who know better, is the name of the game these days, and while I’m certain other people have written on this topic, I aim to take it on as a person who is directly descended from some big name colonists: People in the American Revolutionary War. While heroes in a lot of ways, it’s true that the founding of America, but worse, its expansion, relied on genocide, among other horrific things, of Indigenous Peoples.

The particular form of colonialism that has happened in the Western Hemisphere has often taken up Christian Nationalism, for example, in the form of Manifest Destiny and the Monroe Doctrine. These, in my opinion, false prophets, have advanced, globally, a narrow worldview, and have often imposed it, by force, on billions of people by now.

The world, were it not for this colonialism, might have been much more rich and diverse; lives that were lost or stolen might have advanced humanity in ways we cannot imagine.

At this moment, Donald J. Trump, unsurprisingly to many of us, is simply carrying on an old, old colonial tradition. He has, at various times, wanted to take Greenland, Venezuela, and even the entire Western Hemisphere. To make this clear to readers who know a lot about a paradigmatic evil figure, Adolf Hitler, Hitler said he needed “living room.” That faux need is what fueled occupation of, say, Poland, and the eyeing of conquering as much of the world as possible. What’s more, Hitler, rounded up millions of people who met the rich diversity of life: Jews, Lesbians, Gay men, Bisexual people, Catholics, people with disabilities, and transgender people.

But look at the above photographs: These are Indigenous people who are transgender; two spirit. These, we hope, happy and healthy people, deviated from the Christian Nationalist norm.

During a period of around 70 years, the United States implemented an experiment in the construction of social reality: “Kill the Indian, Save the Man.” Indigenous children–not just in these United States (Canada and Australia did the same)--were rounded up and forcibly indoctrinated. On the gurney to be excised was their language, their ways of dress, their hairstyles, their religion, their forms of care, and, yes, their sexual and gender identities. Heaven forbid, even for colonists, that anyone be openly LGBTQIA prior to Stonewall.

Now we come to see that the Gender Critical project of today fits exactly within the realm of colonialism. Internationally, these projects, once they are known about, are condemned and halted.

Hopefully, if you are not convinced of this, I have at least given you a starting point to do honest research on the matter.

Musk, Trump, and The Military Aparatus

We have plenty of oil in Alaska alone. I was born in Texas, where oil is called "black gold." Iran is a theatre for Americans--and the world. It's hiding a quid pro quo between Musk and Trump.
